Wayne Nicholson Tom Seddon, in his book 'The Seddons', described a trip back to Kumara in the late 1890s, with the youngest children scrambling to get the top seats!
The best seats were next to the driver/reinsman, even in bad weather.

The stream bed is too smooth for a Canterbury or Otago stream. A coastal environment is my pick. The coaches used to travel along beaches as they where flat and easy going for the horses. In the Westport/ Charleston area the early coaches ran from Westport to the old Cement works along the beach, across land to the north end of the Tauranga Bay beach then down the Nine mile beach to the Okari and Totara river mouth then down the beach on the south side as far toward Charleston as they could.
