Mining and Milling Remains, Rimu Area. - ALBUM -

DescriptionPottered around on a local goldfield (Rimu area) this afternoon. Saw plenty of the usual finds; water races, dams, tunnels, shafts, miners benched tracks and signs of early logging/milling.

Photo 1:Miners Dam still holding water. There are many small dams in the Seddon Tce. Mt Misery area. Some still hold water and some have been drained.

Photo 2:Old County Council track for miners and prospectors near Mt Misery as it looks today.

Photo 3:This is a borrow pit where gravel was extracted by the builders of the County Council track which went past Mt Misery. The old track is easy to follow though overgrown and was well metalled back in the 1800's when it was built.

Photo 4:Trench. I'm not sure if this is a shallow bit of trenching done by prospectors or the remains of an old sawpit used by the miners/water race builders?
Photo 5:Tunnel on an old water race.

Photo 6:A very deep mine shaft. A stick took 16 seconds to reach the bottom as it fell bouncing off the sides. Some of the shafts were much shallower with objects taking just 4 seconds to reach the bottom. This one was dry though some were partially filled with water.
