DescriptionThe Point Elizabeth coal mine Borders the east side of Dunollie at the start of the Rewanui Incline, 10 kilometres north of Greymouth. Overgrown tunnel entrances still remain.
The Dunollie area was explored by James Bishop in the late 1890's for the Greymouth Point Elizabeth Railway and Coal Company. The New Zealand state government opened the mine on 17 March 1902, initially producing 250 tonnes per day and by 1908, 1208 tonnes per day. The mine closed in 1928 producing 2,431,725 tonnes of coal. Three tunnels were initially driven into the hills, with mining concentrating on the Exhibition Coal Seam, 10-12 feet thick, which could be seen outcropping on the cliff face bordering Seven Mile Creek. Faults north and south threw the coal seam westwards 100 feet in both cases. A.R. Guinness was reported as mine manager in 1910.Map^[1]ContributorTony Kokshoorn
