They certainly did and they may not have known it at the time as they were just making a living as were all the miners and timber workers on the Coast this country was built on the backs of these hard working men but you wouldn’t think so now with the city slickers and greenies running the show and what a state it is in now thankfully most if not all of those old sloggers have passed on and not around to witness it

Anne Mcmillan Miller My Mate was an 85 year old bushman, and I said to the boss after felling a 5' through Rimu When are they going to pull out the native tree's we were felling. I was told later. After clear felling a large area we were brought back in to plant Pine trees, Then I was told that the native Timber would be brought out when the Pines were ready to harvest, My Old mate looked at me and said SOD them I'm off, I joined him and we both ended up at the Paroa Hotel. Never went back.

A good place for a deer anywhere though there in seventies and eighties had a chap call me just last weekend asking were could be sight in his rifle and I had to say not out there how things have changed!!

Certainly was hard yakka shovelling coal with the banjo trimming the face with a pick and pushing wagons of coal by hand sweat pouring off you ,,,,when you got to the bathhouse to shower all the coal-dust off you could see the streak marks where sweat had run down you face ,,,,,,
