About this image
Description
There was some discussion at Keith Funnel's post of a James Ring photo of a member of the Loyal Orange Order a couple of years back and where there may have been lodges in the West Coast (Greymouth, Dunollie). (see external link below) This week a photo turned up of my Great Grandfather James William Barnett (1867-1941) as a member pf The Lodge of the Loyal Orange Institution, at Granity. I'd guess this was taken in the late 1910s to mid 1920s. This organization had a presence in New Zealand from the 1840s apparently, and seems to have really hit its stride in the 1900s-1910s. The Orange Order was fairly specific being a social organization that was founded in Ireland for protestant men, but was also for Ulster Scots and British Unionists. It is still operating in some capacity in New Zealand today.
