A old map from a Shell petrol advert .ca.1948.
Patricia Herd Kirby
When I lived in weheka in the 50's my dad was the freight driver from Hoki to paringa and I travelled lots with him. Remember all those place names, there was 365 corners on the Franz/Fox hills, same number of days I a year. There was the odd corner he had to back up to get around. And a hours trip. Had to go around the forks hotel too. Winding road down to lake ianthe from pukekura. Was a lovely place to grow up in. Also knew all the people en-route.Date of Photo1948Map[1] ContributorBob Homewood

Bob Homewood
That is what I thought when I found it a lot of places and different names

It's a good clear one too. Good to see some of the places I'd forgotten about, like Koiterangi. Even gold dredges marked. And a southern Wanganui River! Didn't know it was there.
Graham A Kyle
Great to see, and of course the road had "lost" a lot of the bends, and how far inland one travelled at times. And a lot of the names have changed since I was first there in 1964, thanks for posting this Bob.
Margaret Elaine Sadler
BOb I think there was a pub at Hendes?

Went to Weheka School in 1947.The Post Office apparent changed Waiho and Weheka to identify with the Glaciers. Was all about tourism even then.A pity as the old folk always used the old names,in fact it was always called Weheka then

I didn't think fergusons bush was on the Ross side of the Mikonui.??? :)
Helen Leach-John Morel
we still have a old shell atlas of NZ
Patricia Herd Kirby
Fergusons bush is south of mikonui, north of pukekura. Maybe it is the river they have named in the wrong place, eg up the mountain end. Correct me if I am wrong.
Patricia Herd Kirby
no patricia the Mikonui is in the right place ,we also used to live very close to it at the area then called Donahues, (dont know if it still is,)....they have just put fergusons bush on the wrong side of it,leaving from Ross you go over the river then through fergusons bush. :)
Patricia Herd Kirby
Agreed, knew the mail was wrong. We used to stop at Fergusons in the freight. Used to know all the corners once upon a time. We love at weheka in the 50's and harihari 60's and 70's and the moved to the big city of reefton. Miss that part of the country and the people.
Bob Homewood
Any one know the History of how Donahues got it name please
Lynnette Beirne
Bob you would have memories of the standing and flying quarters on the mañanui straight
Lynnette Beirne
Bob Homewood.....all I know is we used to live across the road from Stewart Chapmans Mill on the cnr of Mitchels road. I think that road is called something else now as well. Mitchells used to farm at the sea end of the road.I think there was a little creek just befor the mill might of been Goat Creek ??? an old guy used to live in a hut up there. :)

Good to see others calling Fox, Weheka! My Mum's old photos had Weheka on them. Couldn't find it when we visited the West Coast, then were told it was now Fox. Can anyone tell me when the name was changed?
Glenn Johnston
Interesting to see "Hendes" formerly Hendes Ferry as a distinct place name on that map. Various spelling variations of names different from today too!

Hari Hari holds two memories for me. There was a deer we always stopped and feed and my dad had a friend, Russell Aldridge we use to visit. There was a small stuffed crocodile up on their toilet cistern which had to be removed before I would go in. Very scary for a six year old
Anne Boddy
Sue Vaukins I remember that too

There used to be in the 1950s a sawmill at Pukekura from memory. The mill was a fair way from the main road towards the sea

Bob Laing my father worked there. I thought that the mill was inland from Pukekura. I recall standing on a tiny bit of dry grass and watched Dad and another man (probably Bert Cowan) cut down a very tall tree with a band saw. The huts in which they liv… See more

We used to travel down from Hoki to the Tatare to stay with Molly and Bill Condon and mum would get me to count the bridges, I guess to keep me quiet(er). Can't remember the answer, Baz.
