Presbyterian Church Tainui St Greymouth
It was demolished because it was an earthquake risk because the rear wall wasnt tied in to the rest of the building and the steeple was gradually leaning backwards into the church, which was getting worse as time went by. Was told that when I attending there back in the 1990s by an engineer.Map[1] ContributorMoe Bowes
In the 1990's wasn't it. Would have been some wonderful bits and pieces to salvage during that demo job. Those trusses look like nice wood.
Rosemarie Searle
They were reused in a restaurant near Oxford. They look fabulous.
Jaimee Galloway
What a waste. I spent a lot of my childhood playing in the grounds of the church when I stayed with a friend who lived in the house next door to the one in the photo and it was also pulled down a few years after. The church should have been restored if it was possible it looked nicer there than a petrol station!

Another heritage crime in the many perpetrated over time in Greymouth.
Tamai Sinclair
Les Holmes Germanicus i think the steeple was really hard to demolish because it was full of steel, but generations to come may thank decision makers if and when Alp 8 hits.
Les Holmes Germanicus
Tamai Sinclair it is still a heritage crime where the prime motivation was greed.

At this time is was the Greymouth Uniting Church having merged with the Methodist church demolished sometime earlier down the road. I was baptised there and remember the last service had. It was a great complex and beautiful church. The pipe organ was terrific. There was a great church hall at the back. Was on Māori lease and the cost of this plus required upkeep was far too much for the parish to sustain. However, so much of our history has been lost - we should act to preserve what we can before it is too late.
Linda Maika

Sat on the front lawn the day the steeple came down. not as fragile as they thought. metal rod up the guts stopped it from falling when they put a strop around it. it took some moving , not as dramatic as we were expecting.
Keith Funnell
What year was this church built?

Building standards in the Presbyterian church have got even tougher since the Canterbury Quakes. In our last parish we had to close all of our buildings. One of the churches alone would have cost almost half a million JUST to tie the walls with no other improvements.
Gary Boucher
Shame the title was not changed so the house could be retained.Caricture home which I remember from when Rev.Best was the minister in residence.
