Lawn & Flemings corner (Menswear shop)
Brian McIntyre[
Are you that old Laurie Anisy. I dont remember that place. My only memory of that corner was Barney Sutherland Jeweller
Carolyn Graham
In the late 50's Beggs Music Shop was on the corner where this menswear shop was. I remember Barney Sutherland Jewellers being on opposite side of Mackay St, just past the Old Dominion Hotel.
Clare McDonnell
Must be lunch time....
Brian McIntyre
Could be right Clare McDonnell. Looking at shadows the sun must be right overhead
Margaret Elaine Sadler
Sorry Brian......... Sutherland Jewelers were in Tainui Street opposite the ABC.
Clare McDonnell
Wasn't raining either...lol
Wayne Leckie
The bikes out number the cars. Wish it was like that now
Clare McDonnell
They'd have half hour for lunch...bike home to a cooked meal and then back again..or maybe it was 1 hr....
Carolyn Graham
Whoops in my comment I mean't to put Sutherlands Jewellers was in Tainui Street.
Brian McIntyre
They must have moved after I shifted to Nelson in 1963
Doug Reinheimer
Owens bakery in the 70's had the best ever meat pastie and saugage roll – yum
Laurie Anisy
Right Doug, great meat pasties, liked them cold.
Karen Green
bikes still rule hey especially here in Christchurch
Jack N Pat Manderson
my great uncle Jack Owen started the bakery there.
Brian McIntyre
Nice to learn the history of notable Greymouths old businesses Jack N Pat Manderson
Brian McIntyre
They didnt use much paint on the pedestrian crossings back then. I have a recollection of that sign on the pole by the word Lawn of that corner shop but can not think of what it said so it must have been there for sometime after this photo.
Doug Reinheimer
ok I won't ask Brian but alf harriosn must have had his shop in between
Geoffrey Bell
Hairdressers where Alf Harrison's Menswear is. Begg's were still on the corner in the mid to late 60's. We used to meet there at lunch times to listen to the latest records. Wasn't there a shoe shop along there as well at one time? (Reynold's)
Brian McIntyre
Doug Reinheimer I would at a guess say the Alf Harrisons shop doorway would be behind that shade blind on the left hanging down between the veranda posts. That Coast morning sunshine must have been too bright for Alf
Max Vicki Messenger
Good to see the advanced thinking in Greymouth in those times.. The big wide cycle lanes wold be the envy of cyclists in the North Island.
Brian McIntyre
Margaret Elaine Sadler Well what was the name of the jeweller on that corner then, because I bought an engagement ring from there in or about 1961 and I am 99 % sure it was Sutherlands then with chiming clocks in the display windows. Mind you it could have been a parralel importer as the marriage didnt last too long.............Come on someone help me
Laurie Anisy
Brian. Sutherlands Jewellers were on that corner, but I would have thought it was after 1961, Beggs Music were there prior to that, around 60 to mid 60s
Brian McIntyre
Thanks for that Laurie Anisy and you have got me thinking and maybe I bought it closer to 1963 as we got married 20/3/1965 now how was that for dredging up that date from memory. Got a few grey ones left I guess
Alan Sheehan I bought an Electric Guitar from Beggs on the corner around 67/68, also Owens pies were hot and a little runny but very tasty !!
Brian McIntyre
We are narrowing it down Laurie Anisy Alan Sheehan
Kelvin Henham
Bruce Woodly jewellers were on the corner in the late 70s
Malcolm Howell
Beggs Music Centre before Bruce Woodley.
Jakh Heremia
Sutherlands jewellers prior to that. Sutherlands Corner in the early 70's
Alfred Thomas
Can anyone remember the name of the pub diagonal from Sutherland? Mum remembered a pub there but can not recall name. Maybe starts with T.
Neil Martin The Dominion
Neil Martin yep "the" starts with T
Alfred Thomas
Mum says Dominion was further down Mackay St.
Neil Martin
Dominion was next to woolies on the corner of Mackay and Tainui
Alfred Thomas Maybe you are right. There have been so many changes over the years.
Neil Martin Very hard after years to remember just what was where. this from a recent post
Alfred Thomas
Was Four Square next to Hays?
Neil Martin
not that I can recall. Hannahs shoe shop is next to hays
Brian McIntyre
I can young fella Neil Martin
Neil Martin
on the bank side Brian? not K stores ?
Brian McIntyre
No Neil I was refering to Hannahs
Neil Martin
Aha my bad puctuation I'll fix it
Neil Martin
And Hannahs only recently moved across to the otherside of Tainui St
Brian McIntyre
Yes right again Neil Martin
Alfred Thomas
Cheeky Neil you had me confused.
Mum was just saying she worked at Zampese shoe shop next to Alf Harrison. That going back before I will was even thought of.
Neil Martin
Thought I was wrong once Brian McIntyre turns out I was only mistaken
Neil Martin
Can see the stripes denoting a Barber Shop there in the main pic
Alfred Thomas
I was looking at same the Neil. Mum recalls three shops very close together between Sutherland and Owen. Must have been quite cramped.
Margaret E Sadler
Alfred Thomas the hotel you mum talking about is it this one on the corner of Tainui & Mackay St....
Margaret E Sadler
Neil Martin..... Arnold worked at Sutherlands when it was opposite the ABC in Tainui Street. He was there in 1968 . do you or any know when it was moved to where Robyn Ross is now?
Brian McIntyre
That would have been the Empire Hotel Margaret Alfred Thomas
Neil Martin
was a small Chemists there too not the large one that now occupies the space but maybe it was one of those 3 your mum remembers
Margaret E Sadler
Malcolm Howell you should know on your nightly security walks were was Zampese shoe shop and when did Sutherlands move to the above Wade's building please?
Geoffrey Bell
Alfred Thomas. I recall the shoe shop being called Reynolds Shoe Shop at one time. Can you confirm that? Reynolds had a bach at Moana.
Brian McIntyre
I can remember Zampese's and Reynolds as well but I can not place them. I think that there was a small boot repair between the Dominion and Woolies and was owned by a Mr Rudd
Alfred Thomas
Geoffrey Mum says yes. It may have become Reynolds after Mr Zampese took ill.
Brian McIntyre
Was his name Louie Zampese
Alfred Thomas
Brian Yes. Louie took over from his father.
Margaret E Sadler
I miss Postie he would know the answer to all these questions.
Patricia Zampese
There was 2 lot's of Zampese's Blake street and Marsden Road I angelo's daughter 136 Blake street, my Grandfather was Marco
Brian McIntyre
Barry Brown..... When he left he didnt give us a forwarding address for him either and heaven is such a big place, so I have heard. We will have to all send him our thoughts and he just might send us a message back, knowing our Barry. A good man gone.
Brian McIntyre
I went to school with Marco. Another class mate stabbed a pencil into his skull and snapped the pencil. Patricia Zampese
Malcolm Howell
Margaret Elaine Sadler strangely I can't remember Zambese's Shoe shop. Sutherlands moved into their store opp ABC early 60's sometime. I know I bought some jewellery off them in 1965 there.
Eddie Bourke
I did some of my apprenticeship after Lou sold to my old boss Fred Pascoe about 1956/57 on Mawhera Quay then I moved to Ch Ch
Eddie Bourke
Brian I finished my apprenticeship at the Lion Shoe service in ChCh if u know it
Brian McIntyre
No I dont know that place at all Eddie Bourke. You any relation to Clare Bourke who married Bobby Harrington
Eddie Bourke
Clare's father was my fathers 2nd cousin
Brian McIntyre
I remember Clare. I was one of the Puketahi St kids that practically lived at Harringtons. John was just months older than me.
James Newby
There’s some 1930s era cars in the photo
Johannes Debreuk
Wow awesome. Where did we go wrong. Why did we destroy this part of town
Mike Roberts
Maybe it's my age talking Lol, but early pictures show a charm lacking in modern design :-)
Mike Roberts ...
I mean in general, not just Grey :-)
Stephen Roberts
That Post Office was just awesome such a shame
Don Hutton
Late 1930s or 1940s by the look of the cars outside the Post Office.
Cynthia McCaughan
Frank Benjamin Lawn ran a tailoring business for many years in Greymouth. His mother arrived in Greymouth as a girl with her mother, Dinah Hart(later Hansen) brother and sister sometime after 1868.
Don Hutton
There were Lawns in Reefton in the 1870s. Same family?
M
Cynthia McCaughan
Don Hutton there were, Sarah Hart married Thomas Lawn and they lived in Greymouth and Reefton. Thomas had a brother Edmund, also in Reefton. Sarah Hart's sister Rachel married James Lawn, they lived in Tasmania, Greymouth, Merrijigs and Blackspoint. James brothers John and Henry were also in Reefton. Henry left and went to the North Island, John's family remained in Reefton, descendants still there. So, all Lawns in Reefton either brothers or cousins.
Don Hutton
Lawn born at Blacks Point in 1877. Don't know who his parents were. Thomas & Sarah perhaps? He went to Dunedin where he became manager of Brown Ewing. Married Margaret Dunbar Marshall in 1907. Awarded MBE 1958. Died 1963. Margaret was a first cousin of my grandmother Jessie Hepburn. All of Samuel's descendants are my cousins of some degree. We attended Teachers College with Margaret Kinley nee Lawn but at the time didn't know she was a cousin!
Cynthia McCaughan
Don Hutton yes Sam is Frank's brother. You have corresponded with me before. They are only your 'cousins' by marriage if I recall. Sounds like you need to read my family history book, available at most large libraries; To Live a Long and Prosperous Life.'
Don Hutton
Cynthia McCaughan They are my actual cousins by a "blood" relationship. The relationship of Samuel Lawn's wife Margaret Dunbar Marshall to me is 1st cousin twice removed. Margaret Kinley nee Lawn is my 3rd cousin. I guess you are related to the descendants of Sam? If so we share some relations in common but are not related to each other. I'll have a look for the book. Thanks for the tip.
Cynthia McCaughan
Don Hutton ok my mistake. I thought as your 1st cousin 2 x removed married into the Lawn family this was a relationship 'by marriage'. My 2x great grandmother Rachel is sister if Sarah Hart. Her husband James Lawn, the first if the Lawn brothers and cousins in New Zealand was cousin to Thomas Lawn. Check out my blog Written in Ink and Stone it has some trees which show the relationship
Don Hutton
Thanks. Very interesting. You have obviously put a lot of work into the book and the blog.
Cynthia McCaughan
Don Hutton about seven years :-)
Don Hutton

Frank Benjamin Lawn b 1 Feb 1882 Greymouth, m Hilda Eleanor De Berry in Greymouth on 1 Feb 1910. He trades as FB Lawn for many years. He died in Nelson in 1972.
Don Hutton
I think Lawns was still there when I was a boy in the 1940s. Owens Tea Rooms was. The next building to the left was a government office, the Public Trust? I had my first proper job interview there in 1955. The Post Office still had the clock tower I think. Alf Harrison's little shop was somewhere there too maybe next to Owen's.
Doris Blanchard
Don Hutton I remember all those but don’t remember Owen’s shop being a Tea Rooms. Thought it was just a cake shop. I remember Harker’s Tea Rooms which was quite classy at the time. Alf and Glad Harrison and family were good family friends of ours. Owen was my age and Colin was my brother’s best friend.
Don Hutton
Doris Blanchard If you can zoom in on the name on the street awning in front you'll see it's Owen's Tea Rooms. Maybe it became a cake shop later? Owen Harrison was a couple of years older than me. I'm a youngster at 80!! Alf used to tell customers that the goods they wanted were "in the roadstead" or "just coming over the bar."
Cynthia McCaughan
If you zoom in and look at the women, I would say this dates closer to 1940s - their skirsts are shorter than those from the 30s and they appear to have padded shoulders, the fitted suit-type outfit was popular during the war.
Geoffrey Bell
Alf Harrison's was where the hair dressers is Don Hutton.
Don Hutton
In my memory it was always there, a very small shop. I think it may still be there. I think Owen took over from his father but not sure who owns it now.
Doris Blanchard
I believe that the make of car which is second to the back did not appear in Greymouth until immediately after the second world war. Is it a Ford Mercury?
Don Hutton
Is it a Dodge or Pontiac? The Mercury had a different grill. George Webster had one as a taxi.
Don Hutton
Plymouth is another possibility.
Lawrence May
1940's going by the cars i think also.
