The owner of the Belfast Hotel was John (William?) McQuilkin from County Antrim, Ireland who married Mary Whitty in Hokitika. John had been to gold fields in the USA and Australia and returned to Ireland before he came to New Zealand They also owned a fruit and vegetable shop in Revell Street.Mary and John had two sons while they were living in Hokitika then moved to Lyttelton where they had the licence for the Railway Hotel. Mary gave birth to two more children then died of TB in 1881. She is buried in the Catholic section of the Lyttelton Cemetery. John bought a farm in Eiffelton and he is buried in the Ashburton Cemetery. There are many references to his family in Paper's past. A descendant of John and Mary lives in Hokitika currently (2021) and owns a business there. The other comments made by me are about a different couple, my great grandparents who were cousins of John. All this is now verified.
