My Story

DescriptionThe Reeftonites were asking the BNZ to put in a branch at Reefton - but they seemed reluctant. So the Reeftonites invited the National Bank to come to their town. The National Bank set up a branch - and the BNZ arrived only a few days later !

Incidentally, this branch of the National Bank had a special "gold room" where the amalgam of mercury and gold ( scraped from the mercury table of the stamper battery) could be separated ie heated up so the mercury came off as a gas (very poisonous.) The remaining "cake" of gold could then be weighed to show the mine's yield per ton of quartz crushed.
