CommentsJeremy Sutherland Pizzey had the Phoenix Brewery, it closed in 1893, Mandl's then purchased this malt house. Parker & Garsides were also brewers at Charleston's Standard Brewery.

Glenn Johnston Jeremy Sutherland Pizzey's bought out Parker and Garsides bottlers in Hokitika circa the late 1860's or early 1870's. I believe Pizzey's closed in 1889 but the assets were not disposed of until 1893 some of which were bought by Mandl. An old typed list…See More

Glenn Johnston Parker and Garsides were one of the Dunedin firms that set up branches in Hokitika with the outbreak of the gold rush. Another, J & C Burke of Dunedin set up a depot in Wharf street to handle their bulk beer shipped up from Dunedin.

Glenn Johnston There was a court case in Hokitika in 1866 when Parker and Garsides took a civil case against a sea captain named Hodge for missing cargo. Hodge was captain of the Star of the South that suffered damage sailing for Hokitika from Dunedin. The ship put ashore at Chalky Inlet, Fiordland and unloaded all the cargo which included 9 full hogsheads of porter consigned to Parker and Garsides. Some men were left to keep an eye on the cargo until another ship could pick up the cargo and get it to Hokitika. When the ship William Miskin brought the cargo up from Chalky Inlet there were only four full hogsheads left and one that was quarter full out of the original 9 hogsheads. The emptied hogheads had drill holes in them as did the part full one. It is not hard to imagine how those left to watch the cargo passed their time while waiting for a replacement ship! [A hogshead of beer was 54 gallons which is approx 250 litres therefore just short of 1200 litres of beer went missing]

Glenn Johnston Mary Moffitt There is a short bit of biography of Parker on Papers Past in a Nelson paper from memory. It is from 1893 the time of his death. He retired to Nelson after leaving Charleston. Let me know if you can't find it with a search of Papers Past & I'll have a go. It is there somewhere!
