AddBy: Phil Gibson17th Apr 2019 1:06AMThe Gray River lifted and shook the ship Konini alongside the Wharf in the early hour of the morning.Was an enginer, awoke looked out of porthole and saw power lines flashing and arcing over towards the East.A lot of commotion on decks above, The Mates mostly Brits had never experienced an earthquake and assumed as it was still dark the moorings lines had parted.It went all quiet and still ,so up I got to look around before breakfast. nothing seemed to be amiss. then was told of the real threat was a wharf crane, tethered and almost toppled onto the ship. Later on in the morning walked up the main street to see the fire station half calapsed and most of the windows on shops and buildings on that side broken. I called into the Brian Baru hotel what I saw still is in memory. was about 30 miners not saying a word and steadily drinking. They had come out of a mine earlier that morning I was told. the effect it must have had on them. The rest of the day was jolted by after shocks,
