DescriptionBrighton became a port of entry in 1867, vessels entering the mouth of Fox River. The miners sluiced their tailings into the river causing it to fill with debris so that today the river mouth is so shallow at low tide one can walk across it.

On Jan 18th 1902 the Alexandra bound from Sydney to Westport in ballast stranded at Hatters Beach about 20 miles south of Cape Foulwind. All hands reached shore safely but the vessel was a total loss. The barque lay at an extraordinary position with her bow pointed seaward. A small island cone shaped and about 100 feet high was close to the vessel.

The ships stern was about 30 feet inside the island and about 10 feet from it. The crew threw planks across from the ship to the island, walked across and clambered down to the beach. With the exception of the poop deck the Alexandra was covered at high tide, at low tide there was 11 feet of water at the bow and the stern was dry.

The Alexandra was a steel barque of 655 tons, built in Copenhagen, Denmark in Dec 1891.
The vessel was under command of Captain Peter Ankerson who was apart owner of the barque. The crew were all young men the oldest being only 22 years. The Alexandra was described as being a particularly well found ship, and had 10 months provisions on board.
She was sold at auction for 20 pounds, her stores being sold for 18 pounds.
