My research has shown that the following five commercial breweries operated in Hokitika in 1867. In the 1960’s the Guardian newspaper listed three breweries for 1867 Hokitika but I’m sure their list was incomplete. It seems that only Dunedin & Auckland had more breweries than Hokitika at this time. Here is my list; names and ownership change but I believe these operations would all have been contemporary. This period would coincide with the peak of brewery numbers for Hokitika.
Braun(Brown) & Glover – Sale Street – Hokitika Brewery
Klappe & Kortegast – Gibson Quay – Hokitika River Brewery
Louisson & Co. – Gibson Quay - Victoria Brewery
McCarthy & Williams - Revell Street – West Coast Brewery
Pizzey & Arkell – Weld Street – Phoenix Brewery
*There is also mention of an Augustine Brewery on the corner of Bealey and Stafford Streets but this was perhaps a non commercial operation associated with Augustine nuns who had property in this area.
*There is little information on Braun & Glover sometimes written as Brown and Glover. This brewery doesn't appear to have used newspaper advertising but crops up in records.
*Well known Hokitika brewery owner Joseph Mandl did not found his Westland Brewery until 1872.
