CommentsDon Hutton There was also a detailed survey map of the proposed town with streets and sections held in the Lands & Survey in Hokitika. It is probably now with the successor of that department or Archives NZ but not on the West Coast.

Don Hutton I went to school with Rosanowskis in Greymouth and encountered them over many years in various educational settings including John Rosanowski. The NZ govt agents done good!!

Heather Newby James Codyre.. there were 10 families from Poland who went to live at Smoothwater. It didnt work. It was too wet.. too remote.. hard and expensive to get food. Their land kept flooding and the final death knell was when one of the guys was cutting down a tree and it fell on his house.. killing is wife.That was the end of that.They left via Smoothwater Bay.There were 10 families /50 altogether including the children. They were each given 50 acres of land. My husband and grandson and I went there two years ago. We walked over to Smoothwater Bay. It was a 4 hour return trip. the most rugged"track" ive been on. I got a sense of what it must have been like for the settlers. It is so rugged and remote and waterlogged.I found some interesting anecdotes on Papers Past about their life I will search for them and share them with you.

James Codyre There is a few things named by Charles Douglas who spent much time with the Eggelings at Okuru.My grandmother would tell us tales of his faithful dog.
