Don Hutton We had 3 1100s similar to the one in the foreground from 1966 to 74. Rode very well - hydralastic suspension and front wheel drive were fairly new in those days.
Gordon McIntosh This is Greymouth as I remember - Woolworths and McKenzies were our destination as kids on our annual Christmas shopping trip from Hokitika. We waited expectantly all year knowing that we would each be given a £1 note by Dad - Christmas presents first for all the family - Woolworths and McKenzies had good cheap stuff - and then we could spend the rest on what we wanted!

Gail Johns Remember the little milkbar that was between Woolworths and the hotel? When we had come into town with Mum on the bus from Kaiata we sometimes went there for an "icecream in a dish" as we called it, if there was time to fill before the bus home - it was such a treat for 4 out of town kids. Does anyone remember what that place was called?

The Olympic Milk Bar as mentioned, on the ground floor of the Dominion was started around 1957 by Janice and Durham Ogilvie. Around 1959 Mr Findlay senior approached Durham and Janice and offered to buy the milk bar for his son Graham. The offer was accepted, and Durham and Janice moved to Christchurch and took over the King George Hotel in Madras St. Before the Olympic Milk bar, the space was the kitchen for the Dominion and right next to Woolworths was the back door (tradesman's entrance). From memory my mother had the kitchen and dining room shifted from the ground floor to the first floor 1953 and I can clearly see the red and white striped (West Coast colours) blinds (from Harleys) in the dining room. My Grandparents (Durham and Alice Dowell) owned the Dominion Hotel as well as the Albion (then Kings, Kingsgate now Copthorne) Durham Ogilvie was their eldest grandson, hence the connections. An aside, re the kitchen Dominion Hotel, when I was so, so young and couldn't feed myself or rather dithered with the food, my father Ron, used to feed me, clearly trying to entice me to eat, use to say with each spoon to go into my mouth 'here comes the 'Poolta', the 'Mathew Flinders' 'Rata' (names of ships) coming over the bar and the spoon would enter my mouth. After we left the Dominion for the Gilmer 1955 /56 Jack and Nellie McGlone took over the Dominion.

Was a delightful thriving town and locals could be proud of where they lived. Now look at what we have, a disgrace of a so called town. Buildings are an eyesore, empty spaces where buildings once were. Not a thing here for the locals to be proud of. That is why Hokitika is the preferred place to go.

Was a delightful thriving town and locals could be proud of where they lived. Now look at what we have, a disgrace of a so called town. Buildings are an eyesore, empty spaces where buildings once were. Not a thing here for the locals to be proud of. That is why Hokitika is the preferred place to go.

Greymouth was a great town in those days. You could buy whatever you wanted then without having to go over the hill!
