DescriptionBuilt in 1879, the Hokitika Lighthouse is one of the 14 in New-Zealand designed by John Blackett after 1870.Of Kauri construction the light house was fitted with the fifth order dioptic to burn coal gas from Hokitika town supply, a feature unique to powered light houses in New-Zealand.
18 ft high;122 feet above sea level;light visible from 16 miles.
Discontinued in 1924 the light was dismantled and returned to Wellington.The tower was handed to the Mental Hospital`s department for demolition but was instead fitted out as an observation tower.
As a structure the lighthouse fell into ruin before final restoration by the Heritage Hokitika Inc, in 1999.The replica lamp was added in 2002.
