Constance Barnicoat, was born in Nelson then went to UK, became journalist and in 1903 visited NZ to do some mountain climbing with a guide. Unusually for the day, she usually wore male clothing when climbing. Easy to find info about her (although not photos) online.

The other two women were Miss Ada Perkins and Mrs Jane Thomson from Greymouth (neither in WCR photo), who did many walking and touring trips together from the late 1890’s to 1910. Jane also did many mt. climbs around Otira and after she and her husband moved to Wellington in 1910, she climbed Mt Cook and other peaks in 1916. Became a noted NZ woman climber. She was 3rd woman to climb Mt Cook after Australia’s Freda da Faur and Muriel Graham from the Waiho, and first woman in NZ to do a Grand Traverse of all three peaks of Mt Cook.There is a book written about her called Mt Mountain Calls, by B Moore & G LangtonDate of PhotoBetween 1st April 1903 and 31st December 1903Map^[1]ContributorHeather Newby
