LinkWhataroa BridgeCommentsPeter Kerr The cylinder piers are still standing, how I do not know for they are along way further out of the river than shown here. We were curious to know how little penetration into the bed there was when they finally toppled so they were monitored by taking the occasional cross section -had the mistaken idea it might be useful knowledge applicable to other bridges. Like those at the Taipo that were only 8ft or 2.4m in when picked up. That is why there is a rock weir downstream that gives 12ft or 3.6m. Still not much? But it is plus 50%. Back to the Whataroa. There are no longer the funds for frivolity like monitoring. Better to have a bridge collapse now and again so a few million can be spent on its replacement.
