DescriptionThe cast-iron Orion coal- or wood-burning stove, developed by the foundryman Henry Shacklock in the 1870s in his Dunedin workshop, remained in production almost unchanged until the 1930s. There were no gauges to measure the cooking temperature, which could only be adjusted by altering the fuel in the firebox. However, thousands of New Zealand households cooked food, dried clothes, heated water and kept warm using a stove like this 1920's no.1 Orion.

Trish Rennie I still cook on a coal range..not quite as old as this model but....makes the most delicious scones and cooks the best slow cooked roast meat...never a tough joint out of one of these! Great when the power is out and the bonus is hot water and warmth in winter.

Lizzie Bos They were a great stove we had one in our kitchen in kowhitirangi made great scones etc heated the house, and our pj's on the top rack,and heated the hot water,

stoves today don't come close for multi tasking.

Barry Butcher We had a Shacklock coal range at Crushington but from memory the oven door was on the other side. Our Mother every Sunday would make a loaf of home made bread but not with the modern day bread makers it was a 3-4 hour procedure & the end was an indescribably delicious product and Monday's bread would be fresh & tasty and enjoyed with relish.

Heather Newby Peter Robertson no .. dad was a coalminer but he had a bach out near MT Elliot.. across the river from the Cooperites. There was an old abandoned house just at the beginning of that long metal road past the shop.. and he got the stove from it. It must have been a really old house because those stoves stopped being produced in the 1930`s.
