About this image
DescriptionMalcolm Howell Although it was a main national station, 3YZ did a great job when it disconnected from the main network. We all remember Uncle John - John Pike and his children sessions, "You ask-we play", the hospital request session, the west coast hit parade, the saturday morning garden session, the local sunday evening church session, the local sports results at 7.30pm etc etc. I also remember going into broadcasting house in uniform one morning and being let in by the remote operated door. Then getting a shock seeing the 6am local news being read by a very flustered technician Arthur ----? as Reon Murther had slept in and was not answering his phone in Cobden. So I was requested tk take a quick trip in the patrol car to Cobden and "pull him out of bed". I found Reon frantically running from his house into his little Anglia. All under my watchful eye. Don Hutton Was there a man called Micky Spiers on 3ZR? It may have started as a private station. I seem to recall my uncle Ron Guthrie sold radios for Robert Francis and licences at the same time. Not 100% sure about this.

Judy Biddington Yes Don there certainly was a bloke called Mickey Spiers who ran the station. My Uncle Ern Rowse used to give him a hand making the sound effects for his children's programme (Uncle Mick and Sambo) .My folks scored the large gramophone from the station when it was updated. It had a ginormous horn thing on the top .We lived at Whataroa at the time and when we evenually owned a battery radio Uncle Mick and Sambo kept us kids amused. I am talking about the early to late thirties. Ron Judy Biddington

Bev Huston Peter Sinclair boarded at Mrs Baumgart's in Threadneedle Street; used to announce his presence on air by saying "this is Mrs Sinclair's little boy 'Alice". His mother was a beautician at Beaths where artificial tan was probably easily available; he was known around town as "Suntan Sam". Bruce Huston and Ross Huston were technicians at 3YZ at separate times in the 1960s.

Bev Huston Mick Spiers founded (with others?) Station 3ZR in 1931. Some state subsidy was given to a number of private stations incl. 3ZR until 1940 when the stations were taken over by the State Broadcasting Corporation. I have quite a lot of our Mum's music (the former Betty Vincent) who used to have a regular singing spot on 3ZR in the 1930s. The brothers Ron and Les McDougall were other performers.

Malcolm Howell Murray McLaughlin is a media officer at the Northern Land Council. Till late last year he was the ABC's Northern Territory news editor. He features regularly on ABC's Evening Report. Murray has covered some very contenious and political issues. He is a skilled interrogator and mis ethodical in any of his investigations. He learnt a lot with 3ZA and Jim Breeze. I have great memories of Murray in Greymouth.

Don Hutton Bev Huston Thanks for the info about 3ZR Bev. I can remember Ron or Les McDougall driving past our place (24 Marsden Rd) with the window down and singing his heart out! They lived in Marlborough St I think. Wasn't Les also in the Greymouth Operatic Society?

Bev Huston Yes Les was in the Operatic. I joined the Operatic Orchestra with a school friend called Jos who lived at 24 Marsden Road too about 1959.. Les was part of the crew then (and also Philharmonic.) . We were both at school when we shuffled across from the GHS Orchestra to both Operatic and Philharmonic - Jos was on violin and me viola,.

Back in the early 70's Murray McLaughlin (spelling?) was a newsreader on the local radio station. At the time he was friendly with one of the IRD staff and accompanied her to a booze up at the Paroa Hotel held to farewell a chap Transferring to Christchurch. The truth was that the tansferee was little more than a basic grader but we assured Murray that he was the District Commissioner of Stamp Duties and was transferring on promotion. On his way home Murray called into the station, wrote a news item and left it for the next mornings newsreader. Within half an hour of the item being broadcast the Greymouth Evening Star was banging on the IRD boss's door demanding to know why the radio was given a 'scoop' that they did not get. Needless to say the boss suspected me first and hauled me in to find out what I knew and was I responsible. I owned up as being one of the 'criminals' and didn't pot the others (including Murray's escort: Hi Glenys). Luckily we had a decent boss who took it no further because giving Press releases was strictly forbidden to all but the bosses class.Brian McIntyre

3YZ was the one radio station we could get when I was growing up. The Saturday morning request session that everyone listened to while doing chores, whether it was the Elizabethan Serenade requested for someone in the old folks' home for their birthday, or the latest pop tune; the radio serials - Dad and Dave, The White Coolie, Now It Can Be Told (war stories) and of course the weather forecast and the news. (The BBC news would crackle through the ether in the morning...) No TV then. 3YZ was it - and there was such a sense of community because you never everyone listened.
The results from every polling booth were broadcast after every election day. There was lots of speculation in our little township when one Communist vote was declared in the results for our nearest booth. Who was the unknown Commie in our midst?!
