Description19 men were killed when an explosion ripped through the Strongman mine at 10am on January 19th 1967. An investigation concluded that safety regulations had not been followed and that a shot hole for a charge had incorrectly fired.
Located just north of Greymouth the Strongman mine(New Zealand's largest underground mine) had an impeccable safety record since it opened in 1939.Date of Photo1967Map^[1]ContributorZody Ensor

Graeme Williams As an employee of State Mines at the time, I was at the cemetary that day to farewell those miners, most of who I knew. it was a terrible day, weather wise and the fact so many men died prematurally.
