This is a great shot of the soup kitchen at Burnetts Face in the Depression. Denniston had a soup kitchen too, not sure of other coal towns.

My father was there in Burnetts Face during this time. My Mum and Dad moved over the hill to Christchurch. I always remember Dad telling me the had nothing.

Would love to find out who they are my father was born at Burnetts face 1915 .The Fox family had a number of family members up there over the years

What a tragic story. No one now knows how tough it was , my dad got rickets. He fossicked for left over food, from garbage cans.

Aileen Thornley Dads father was killed in an accident when he was 6..about 1931 ,and they scavenged food..He knew where all the wild fruit trees were.

When he heard that it was the only time he ever went to my school.

My Grandparents lived in Runanga on the Seven Mile Rd. Dad told me that during that time men would be traveling down the road with there swags looking for work and Nan would get them in for a meal.
