DescriptionBuilt on the Greenstone Creek bed - the police camp was built on the terrace above. Pretty wild place in its day - until a flood came down the creek and washed it away.

Greenstone is along the Pounamu Creek opposite Kumara, off the Taramakau. The site of the first official gold discovery late 1864 Great riot there about 1868, when a man started singing "Three cheers for the red white and blue" in one of the local pubs. The Irish men, who were busy celebrating St Patricks Day, tried to get hold of him to lynch him. The brave cops stayed in their camp, saying they couldn't cross the river to save him. He was rescued by the local priest and hidden in an empty house...(Anne Hutchison)
