Story of Alexander Frederick McIntyre
My Story
DescriptionAlexander Frederick McIntyre was born 18th October 1893 at Kamaka (according to his Army personal records)Kamaka is North of Greymouth and his Grandfather Malcom McIntyre worked and lived nearby at Notown. Alexander was just 20 years and 10 months at his time of enlisting with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion on the 13th of August 1914. He was not a tall man of just 5 foot 7 inches or 1.67 metres in todays language. With a weight of 138lbs or 61.3 kg so he wasn't a big man by any means. Still runs in the family today. Alexander was a labourer working for a G Anderson of Greymouth according to his records, but with no mention of what his work was. So once again he was not any kind of academic which still runs true in the family today as well. From other information I have obtained Alexander worked for Kennedy Brothers who ran a bus and taxi service in Greymouth.
I Brian T V McIntyre am to the best of my genealogy knowledge Alexander's second cousin born in 1942 in Greymouth. Alexander was born to my Grandfather's sister Margaret out of wedlock and so was kept in the family as her brother. When Alexander signed up his next of kin was Mrs M McIntyre of Herbert St Greymouth. Unfortunately with no street number. Obviously his mother remained unmarried for some time while raising Alexander using the Mrs attached to her name. However she did marry a William Richardson in later years. Alexander embarked from Lyttelton by ship with both the Tahiti or the Athenic being mentioned in his records; on the 16th of October 1914 with a destination of the Suez Canal. Alexander is described as having been killed in action at Gallipoli on the 27th of April 1915 just two days after the landing on the 25th of April which we now commemorate as Anzac Day. So one could assume that he survived the horrific beach landing only to be killed by the Turks. I would have thought that he being a McIntyre like me, that he would have been down so close to the ground that a bullet would never find him. There is no mention of any burial site but he is remembered on panel 75 at Lone Pine Memorial at Lone Pine Cemetery Anzac Turkey. Looking through Alexander's records I see that his signature is very close to the style of mine which is spooky, but in a nice sort of way.
I first became aware of Alexander when I overheard my father and his cousin whispering about this guy being illegitimate but thought nothing more of it. Ironically it was on Anzac Day in 2009 that I began my search for Alexander on the Internet and here it is today on Anzac Day 2015 that I am posting this into history. You deserve this accolade my cuzzy for your sacrifice. I wish that I had known you but I am maintaining your mother grave for you. Cheers Alexander.
