In Revell street about where spca shop is Bryant's shoe shop was next door
Dianne Kemp
I thought the Empire Hotel was down Revell street opposite where Maitland’s Furniture used to be .,Wasn’t it owned by the Devaney’s ( and then maybe The Keats family ?
ShonaandMurray Marshall
Dianne Kemp think that was the commercial and then there was the one right on the corner where Colleen and Ray white had, and put laundry Matt there. When you think in 1860 there were over 80 pubs in Revell street. Must have been big drinker
Jeanette Sandri
It looks like the old occidental flats opposite were Maitland's were.
Bev Kelly
Was it the hotel that was quite near to Richards Grocer shop, perhaps?
ShonaandMurray Marshall
Bev Kelly that was the Dominion
Carol Linklater
I remember the Hotel. It was burnt in 1950's and was in Revell Street about where the 2nd hand shop is or the New World car park. There was another further along Revell Street same side towards what was Hood's Shop.
Marilyn Paterson
Carol Linklater oh there’s my theory out the door then ! It must have been the other one I can remember.
Glenn Johnston
Gone before my time but I do remember the Dominion further south on the same street.

Clare Pierson
According to Henry Pierson in his book "The Crooked Mile" the Empire Hotel was originally called the Masonic. There was a music shop beside it and next to that was where Jim Fairlie began his fruit and vege business back in the 1950s, on the East side of Revell Street. Gordon Bryant shoe shop was on the North side of the Empire Hotel. Towards the end of the time it was called Masonic it was owned by someone called Morgan. Then Dick Furness ran it followedby Ted Sheriff then an English man called Tommy Thompson. At that time Henry who worked for Groufskys did some repairs to the building. Next was George Agnew until the Licensing Commission decided to reduce the number of Hotels in Hokitika. The Empire burned down in 1959.
Marilyn Paterson
Clare Pierson thanks, I was going to get that book out today to check.I think the one down the other end may have been the Dominion, but I’ll check. I can remember the fire, I was in town with my mother when there was a fire down at Fairlies end. What a lot of history was in Hokitika on Revell St.
Clare Pierson
Marilyn Paterson I had left Hokitika in January 1959 so was not there at the time of that fire.
Kath Rogers
