DescriptionOld stone store - Kowhiterangi / Koiterangi - I believe that in the early days this store was run by local farmer Harold Leo (Whitie) Michel whose father Henry Leslie Michel was the mayor of Hokitika.

Rosemary Thomas Nice to see it is still there. There used to be a hut down by the river - Is it still there?

Marilyn Paterson An old photo,the doors were replaced a few years ago and it looks better than this.

Marianne Kelly Yes it's a few years since I took that for my daughters Marilyn - one of them was curious about it but couldn't remember going there with her father to see it.

Glad to hear it's being looked after. Sorry Harold Lee - you are right it is concrete

Matt Fairmaid Yes looks alot better now with a new roof and front, thanks to Alvin and Kay Godfrey the current land owners.

Marilyn Paterson The doors were repaired in our time there. Also ,I believe it has been sold.

Marianne Kelly I heard someone was thinking of buying it.

Jeanne Godfrey Barry said it closed before his time but cars/transport and deliveries from town ie Butcher, Bakery etc put him out of business.

Anthea Keenan Ralph Mackley, a single man from Waipuna began farming 1903. Mecanically minded obtained agency in 1909 to sell oil engines, chaff cutters & shearing machines. He saw need to have general sore so built the store about a meter above ground level to avoid flooding. In 1912 he purchased big eight seater service car & started regular passenger & goods service to Kokatahi & Hokitika - continued the service until 1921 when Harold Michel took over and ran the store until late 1930s... Dave Lyes Amazing how you get stories wrong for so long. For some reason I always thought it was a creamery and farmers took their churns of milk there.
Didnt know it was a store, nice to know the right history
