CommentsAlan Sheehan: Just west of Candies I can remember the hut being there!!
Geoff Guenole: The hut was there to shelter from the sun. I remember it was sunny there once in 1968.
Vic Ollerenshaw: What a great photo, I was foreman on the road then and we had just been funded to chip seal the gorge so buses could use it again. Widening and guard rails near Reids falls had started, then the Inangahua earthquake enlarged the slip below the falls.
Geoff Bell: Great photos, where is Candy's bend? I can see Reids falls. When was the hut put there?
Vic Ollerenshaw: Candy's bend bridge is about 50 metres up from the hut. The hut was put there in the early 60's before Candy's bridge was completed to provide shelter if someone became marooned by the frequent washouts in the area.
Esther Bruns: I remember driving on that road, it was SCARY.
Kerry Keating: Vic, are you related to Hughie Ollerenshaw? He was my boss in the Ministry of Works back in the sixties.
Vic Ollerenshaw: Yes he was my father and was in charge of building the current Otira bridge along with a lot of others on that highway.
Kerry Keating: Bloody good bloke.
