Description Lyell was named by the geologist Julius von Haast after the Scottish geologist Charles Lyell who wrote principles of geology.

The ghost town is now a campsite maintained by the Department of Conservation. None of the original buildings remain but a track from the campsite leads to a cemetery and an old stamping battery.

The gold rush in Lyell was in 1862. A dray road that was built at the time towards the Lyell Saddle is now the start of the Old Ghost Road, an 85 kilometres (53 mi) mountain biking and walking trail connecting with Seddonville close to the West Coast beaches.Map^[1]External LinkWikipediaContributorHeather Newby‎
