DescriptionNew Zealand's largest gold nugget was found in the Ross Goldfields 100-years ago. Bigger than a fist it was, the Roddy nugget is still the largest lump of gold ever found in New Zealand.

It was discovered a century ago on this day at Ross on the West Coast in Jones Creek in 1909.It was gifted to the Royal Family who either misplaced it or melted it into a tea service. Buckingham Palace isn't quite sure what happened to it, but no one in Ross is fretting too much about that.
They turned out in style on 12th Sept 2009 to mark the centennial. Historian, Les Wright, explains how the Roddy Nugget was uncovered.
