About this image
Description This is at Turiwhate, once a thriving little mill and stage coach stop town on State Highway 73, between Kumara and Jacksons. This was the Catholic Church, and is on private property. Very special little spot, the site of many christenings, weddings and celebrations for the "Christchuch Road" community over the years.
Peter Kerr.. Rangiriri Creek was the site of a police barracks in the earliest days of the Old Christchurch Road. The police land later became an education reserve and school site, Just downstream of this well remembered little church.Date of Photo1954Map[1] ContributorDick Stevens

Thanks Terry . I went to school there for a year when my aunt, Sue Manson was the teacher at the time. For some reason I thought it was a little bigger and I remember there was a pot belly in the corner. Only about 7 or 8 students. Used to spend most of the day looking out the window at the waterfalls on the other side of the river lol.
Haley Pugh
I have many memories as a child of the walk down across the creek and through the paddock to mass at the church. It was always a good catch up with everyone in the valley on a Sunday, although as a kid the adults seemed to talk for far too long after mass. I know Mum and Bryan Fitzgerald have spent many hours down there keeping the inside in top shape, and we had a family working bee to give it a real going over a few years ago for a family members wedding too. The outside has been waterproofed as best as we could with what we had to protect the interior
Glenys Anne Byrne
Haley Pugh I have fond memories of celebrating Mass there for your mum's 60th birthday didn't need a bell, your dad gave a perfect rendition of an alter bell, to help celebrate the eucharist. Xx

The church sits on what was my dad's family land, the Neames'. Peter mentioned Rangiriri, the land being education land, the school is still there near the road and bridge, used as a bach, from 10yrs old, my dad, Terry, attended this school. While his mum was catholic, hence the church, his dad, Walter wasn't, so not all of the seven children, 21yrs between the eldest and youngest, in the family, became Catholics, including my dad, the eldest. Thanks for posting.
