Geoffrey Bell The whole Bay was originally known as Cashmere Bay, but at some time an alternative name of Iveagh Bay appeared. Possibly early 20th Century, or late 19th after the railway came through. Today the entrance to the Bay is known as Iveagh Bay and the rest Cashmere Bay.

Geoffrey Bell
Geoffrey Bell Towards the end of the 19th Century the people of Greymouth were hungry for a more social outdoor life. Access by railway to Lake Brunner provided this and it didn't take long for trainloads of people to head there. Picnics, Sports Days and Boating Regattas were well organised. Boat Races and Yachting were particularly popular. Edward Iveagh Lord (Jnr) was into athletics and participated at Lake Brunner. Edward Iveagh Lord (Snr) was Town Clerk in Greymouth and performed many other clerical duties for the Council. There is a good possibility that both were strongly involved in sports at Cashmere Bay in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Edward Iveagh Lord (Snr) died in 1911.
