About this image
DescriptionEx New Zealand midland railway "La" class loco. The loco was built for the NZMR co then taken over by NZGR, next went to the sawmill and ended up in the Grey river at Omoto with the other locos, this is one of the locos pulled out of the river about 9 years ago and now sits at Springfield.
Peter Kerr
This is New Zealand Midland Railway No3 that became NZR No312, NZR dumped in the river 1928-29 - downstream of the later big dump that has a pair of small F class right at the bottom. It never worked for a sawmill, that was NZMR No5/ NZR314 that worked for New Forest Sawmill at Ngahere into the 1950's before being scrapped.Date of Photo2005Map[1] ContributorJeffrey Harrison

CommentsJeffrey Harrison At Springfield in Jan this year (2014)
Jeffrey Harrison The "midland rail heritage trust" are the group that have it and one day are going to restrore it BUT the group seems to be idle or close to it just now for a number of reasons. I would love to see it under cover or better yet given to the "National railway muesum" project at Ferrymead in Christchurch.
Kyle Webster wow interesting-are there any more locos in the river?
Jeffrey Harrison There are a good number of locos and wagons in the river and up the bank at Omoto, there is a couple of good websites about it, just google it.
Greeny Ty Jim Staton you know anymore about this.
David Maciulaitis La 314 at Ngahere, not dumped in the Grey River, but cut up I believe on site at Ngahere. The engine at Springfield is La 312, owned by the Reeves Family, who produced a video of the recovery at Omoto, and exploration of the loco dump. - http://www.whitebusfamily.co.nz/all_videos_page.htm

what were they thinking? dumping trains in the river!!
Murry McKendry
Was watching the day she was pushed over the bank into the river
Murry McKendry crikey.. that would have made a splash!!
Murry McKendry
Just a small one as river level was down
Murry McKendry
They did that to protect the river bank below the railway Heather
Shelly Baxter
How many are in the Grey River?
Murry McKendry
I think there was 4 or 5 went in over a period of time, best recollection was that there was 3 dumps but could be wrong
Shelly Baxter
Thanks for the info. It's sad thinking of them at the bottom of the river.
Les Bryce
you can't keep everything otherwise the world would fill up
Murry McKendry
There was a lot of wagons vans and maybe old carriages that was deemed U.S. that were dumped
Lawrence Boul
A quick Google of Omoto dump will find a list of the locos (11x) with pics and the recollect site has photos.

Cynthia McCaughan
I will be pedantic and point out that it is not a train but a locomotive engine
Leslie McKendry
There was also an earlier dump (not sure of date) of loco's etc about the point the Omoto Creek joins the Grey River, 1 loco was visible across the creek and a further down toward Greymouth, below where we used to live on Omoto Rd.
Kay Bruce
Train, loco, whatever, still a good item, thanks Heather Newby. I love info like this.
Heather Newby
Kay Bruce I find it amazing what I learn about our history.. from others.. its very interesting
George Gardner
Heather, as this loco was involved in the construction of the East - West line from Brunnerton to Rolleston, and is just lying in a paddock rusting away, I'm thinking that it could well come back home and be placed on static display as a component of our history.
Was whitebaiting directly opposite where more of these are sticking out of the water last week of the season.
Alex Wa
Mabe it will come alive again. with the other two. Myt need a millionaire to help out Unfortunately
Hamish Campbell
Here is a pic of a Grant class loco, designed for sharp corners in lines. ones here had diff smoke stack
Jimmy Foster
And since removed from the river the whole hill has starting to subside as was the very reason the old girls were placed ther
Arthur Bass
Jimmy Foster Greenie intelligence yet again from powers that be.
Daniel Garland
Jimmy Foster the hill has always been subsiding. That’s why they were dumped in the first place. The particular locomotives recovered were pulled out of the river, not from the bank where they were originally placed because subsidence had pushed them into the river channel where they were doing nothing to arrest the slipping of the bank. Omoto has always been a trouble spot for the Railways with unstable land.

I in joyed working on that job was driving one of the cranes at Reefton crane hire that day.
Geoff More
A bit of grease and good as new.
Bill Sullivan
Helped dig out 3 in Invercargill that had been rolled over the bank for erosion protection. Really sad
Andrew John Wilson
I organized the Resource consent that got permission for the locos recovery
Paul Rennie
There are some dumped for protection around the coast past Oaro towards the old tunnel
Dorothy Wills
They should have never been put in the river in the first place even if was for protection, they must have polluted the water
Jamie Vanderlinden
Is there still that one on the bank just up from greymouth?
Was trout fishing and seen it oneday
