LICENSING COURT, GREYMOUTH. (W. H. Revell, R.M., C. Whiteford, R.M., and D. Lundon, "Esq., on the Bench.) \ Wholesale licenses were granted to the following applicants :— Messrs D. Girdwood, Hamilton and Nichol, M. Kennedy, P. M. Griffen, Glenn Bros., M'Millan and Co., and Strike and Blackmore. Wholesale and Bottle Licenses were granted to Messrs James Hamilton, M. M'Donnell, Duncan M'Lean, J. W. Coates, and Mrs Whitmore. Abrahams, United States Hotel, Gresson street. On the application for a license by Mr Hugh Dougherty, of the Sydney Hotel, Boundary street, the police reported that the applicant did not bear a good moral character, that the house was frequented by prostitutes, and cases of petty larceny had been reported as occurring therein. Mr Perliins appeared for Mr Dougherty, making explanations, and urged on the Bench the fairness of granting a license, as no breach of certificate or the house being reported unfavorably on by the police had occurred during the last twelve months. Application refused. On the application by Mr S. G. Rich, of the Argus Hotel, to have Mrs Searight's name substituted, the Bench decided that they could not entertain the application under the Act. The license applied for in the name of Mr Rich was then considered, but the police reporting unfavorably of the house, the license was refused. Mr Redmayne's application to have Mr Leath wood's name substituted as the licensee of the Full and Plenty Hotel was refused. The license was also refused to Red may ne owing to the unfavorable report made in reference to this house by the police. R. Russell, Railway Hotel, Mawhera Quay. This house was reported on as being cleanly kept, but very leaky. The. applicant, on being asked if he intended repairing the house, stated that the; house would require a new roof, and the place was not his own; that the landlord would do nothing to it. Adjourned to 27th May. The application of Mr Patrick Hanney for a license was. granted, but as the license does not come into effect until the Ist day of July, and the. present license terminating on the 7th May, no interim license being applied for, this house will of a necessity be closed for nearly a period of seven weeks. George Cooper, Tivoli Hotel. The police reported unfavorably on this house, and the Bench refused- the license. The consideration of granting licenses to John Quinlan, Tara's Hall Hotel, Richmond Quay ; and Henry Geiseking, Geiseking's Hotel, Tainui street south ; was postponed to the 27th May. The application for a license by Mr E. Ashton was granted, buf; the Bench Btated that the Act provided that only one bar shall be open in the house, and that on and after this, date he kept the two bars open at his risk, unless another license "was obtained. , The Bench decided that they should not grant any new licenses, and the applications of Mr Richard Drew and Mr M. Kennedy were therefore refused. The application of Mr Brassel and Mr T. Cahill for licenses at Maori Gully were refused. The applications for licenses by Messrs Greatrex, Fitzsimmons, and Bell, at Clifton, were adjourned, to enable the parties to put their houses in proper order and repair, in accordance with the Act, before granting licenses. a . New licenses were granted to Mr Bergenah Mrs Sarah M'Ginty A number of applicants in the several districts did not appear, and the. Court adjourned until this day, at two o'clock, to give them an opportunity of being present. ■
