Tom Hartill.." There's a story about the Stillwater cemetery about two Brunner boys given the job of digging out a miner's grave from way back so his widow could be buried with him. When they got down to the old coffin the digger's foot went through the rotton wood at the head of the coffin. As he pulled his foot out the wood closed around his ankle. Ray Vincent Growing up next to the dead centre in Grey I often helped dig graves and help out, can recall a number of digging incidents when opening graves to add another in the plot.
Interesting in those days were the sites where access was possible via a front manhole. All gone now.

Mary Moffitt The group in the photograph walked from Brunner to Stillwater filling the whole width of the road. Several bands were spaced through the group, each one taking up the same tune when the previous one finished.

Anne Honey I had to write an esssy about the disaster and the problems for the families left behind. There was no widows pensions so i asked my grandad a lot of difficult questions. When i handed it in i was asked where i got my information. From my grandad i got an a- . Gee i wish i had of knoen my g/grandfather was in the rescue team.

Mary Moffitt Anne Honey Anne, those men did not talk about the good deeds they did. Fine men, they just got on with things. I do think that they hoped others would notice and maybe remember what they did. Many of our people were like that.
