When I first visited the FJ Glacier in about 1954 (before the hotel burnt down), you could still see the terminal face of the glacier through the church window.
In the early 90s, we had no problems accessing the glacier from above the terminal face; it was quite safe to take our children for a little walk. (Both my husband and I had alpine experience.)
