Looks like pic was taken from the steep uphill section just after the Hercules Creek crossing. A lot of earthworks done to form the road. Amazing achievement.

Curious to know what was done with all the material that was surplus and how long it took the council to process the resource concent

John Armstrong I would say mostly done by blasting and pick and shovel, the rock would have been taken by horse and block dray to somewhere else to be used and failing that pushed over the edge. Even in those days there were surveyors engineers involved and funding issues to be dealt with.
