Banbury Arch, Denniston

DescriptionTwo drystone arches lead to the entrance (obscured far left) of Banbury Mine, one of the first coal mines to open on the plateau at Denniston, Westport. The second, lesser arch, is also obscured at left.
A tramway carried coal from the Banbury Mine (1879-1890), over Banbury Arch, to the Denniston Incline. Horses originally hauled the tubs of coal but they were soon replaced by an overhead chain and finally a surface rope road in 1904.
After Banbury was mined-out it became an access tunnel to much bigger mines that lay beyond.

Theres actually 2 arches. Look to the left of the main one and you can just see a bit of the other one above the scrub.

These relics should be better preserved. There is also a stone bridge up besides Miller's creek at Millerton that is almost overgrown yet it shows the history of the place, and is a lot more interesting than half of the derelict houses we seem to want to preserve.
