The two brothers struck It rich when they found the seam of gold.. and I believe some company came from Australia to try to Buy it from them,, but They turned it down...As the story goes not Long after they lost the seam of gold... But we were always told it was because of an earth quake.
I have A ring from my grandmother...which is made from the gold from That very Mine.

Just re-read a letter from Phil May. I had asked him if he knew how Taylorville got its name. Four of us were in the discussion. Two others argued that it was after Taylor, a shopkeeper there. Phillip and I both thought Taylor, of North Brunner Coal. So it is a draw at the moment. Mind you, Phil did suggest that Taylor could have been both.
Put Shop if you reckon it is the shopkeeper, or Mine if you think the North Brunner Mine owner.

Stan Jelley Can't help, but pleased to see the name of an old running colleague Phil May. Didn't he come from Ross?

Mary Moffitt Yes he did. He has written a number of excellent history books. I was lucky to have him as a tutor one year for history at Canterbury.

Stan, I know that you ran with Harriers on the Coast. Were you also a coach?

Stan Jelley Mary, no, I wasn't a coach, but Phil May and I ran against each other in Hagley relays in Ch'ch and in Lovelock Relays (4 x 1500m) at Otago University Oval. He was one of the fastest club runners in the Hagley over a 2-mile lap around the park opposite the hospital. He was more of a miler, while I was better at 3- and 6-mile races.

Don Hutton Yes Phil was from Ross but not sure if he was named after the town. He attended GTHS (hostel pupil) in the 1940s, teachers college and Canterbury University. A very good athlete, he married Doris Perrin, also a top athlete from Greymouth. His lectures on NZ history were excellent. After marking one of my essays he said I was suffering from "school teachers' disease" (too many words)!! I learned to be more succinct thereafter! His West Coast histories are top class. Sadly he died far to young.

Mary Moffitt Very good looking man as well as being very kind. I was useless at history as a subject. I just love it though. I was communicating with him about a number of things, including the Victory Gold Mine which was over the Grey opposite Stillwater. The story goes that it was a very rich gold seam but they lost the seam when the miners came to a fault in the terrain. Never found it again. Phil said that his mining research stopped just short of that area. Pity.

Mary Moffitt Stan Jelley, you may not have been a coach, but you are considered to have been a shot in the arm for Coast Harriers and running in general. Who were the runners with you that we used to see on our way home to Stillwater. Was Eddie Gray one of them?

Don Hutton Stan Jelley You might remember Fred Goodall and Colin O'Loughlin in the Greymouth Harrier Club too Stan. Roy Anderson perhaps? George McKenzie was at GTHS with us c.1951 - 55. Always a great guy, I agree.
