There was a story around that oil was found but not in commercial quantities. Love to know the truth around this?? Bound to be someone out there that can shed some light.

John Jacobs For years the Oil Company would come back and 'clean the pipes'. Why?

Geoffrey Bell my late father worked for Mobil Atlantic in Greymouth. We moved from Timaru to Greymouth in 1958 & left end of 64 or very early 65. I can recall the talk around oil there but it being capped for a rainy day so to speak. Could all be a myth. Somewhere out there will be an answer????

John, the Americans were here in the early 40's and found oil. Considered then to be not commercially viable and the well was capped.

The last time must have been early 70,s as I remember flying up north to get bags of high expansion foam in Norm Bishops plane as they had a blow and had to seal it.
