Looking up Hendes Gallery. Dates from circa 1907. Restored by DOC in 1996 and maintained by them. The original iron work is still used in the structure.

Name left by the late Les Cleveland. He is very well known as a photographer but was also a mountaineer, journalist, historian, bushman & varsity tutor.

Glenn Johnston Just picking a couple of the names from the two lines that appear to be printed in the same hand; J Park (don't know about the second initial) may have been James Park? James was a lawyer and crown prosecutor for Westland and perhaps not coincidentally was director of a gold mining claim on the Waiho River. James had a son Hugh Park who may be the H Park on the line below.

The gallery used to lead down on to the Franz Joseph Glacier ice. These days the glacier has retreated so far you need to walk quite a long way further up river to Roberts Point to see the glacier terminal face. It has almost retreated as far as Cape Defiance.
