DescriptionMr Jack Renton pilot, a member of the Hokitika hardware retail family took off from the Southside aerodrome Hokitika with passenger Mr Jimmy Lynch former mayor of Greymouth, to fly to Christchurch.
However the plane did not arrive at Wigram and anxiety mounted with the report that the sound of a plane followed by a crash was heard near Turiwhate.
A search party led by M Treacy, T Teen, W Neame, A straight and C Morrison were hampered by the rain and fog.
Searchers found the wrecked plane about 200 feet from the top of the mountain. The engine had been pushed back by the force of the impact killing the men instantly.
Searcher and pilot Bert Mercer removed key parts of the plane before setting fire to the wreckage.
The plane was a Gypsy Moth ZK-AAI.
