Alan Messenger I'd be looking glum also if I hadn't had a beer for maybe 30 years
Roger Howell Very sombre ladies
Rory Paterson Most posed photos in those days people didn't smile because they had to sit there for longer than we do now. But, yes I can imagine one of their meetings being rather dull To say the least.
Pam Englefield-Absolum
Anyone recognise the ladies? And the church ?
Cynthia McCaughan
Pam Englefield-Absolum yes.

One of these would have been Elizabeth Gaskin, I reckon

Cynthia McCaughan Very interesting family names. Samuel Lawn, a likely relation of yours from Reefton, married Margaret Dunbar Marshall, my 1st cousin twice removed, in Dunedin in 1907. Samuel was manager of Brown Ewing, a well known store in Dunedin. Their granddaughter Margaret Kinley nee Lawn who will be your relation too is my 3rd cousin. Attended CGHS and taught with my wife! Small world?
Alan Messenger
Looks like a cheerful bunch
Cynthia McCaughan
Alan Messenger you should see photos of the same era with blokes and their epic beards: grimmer than grim!
Don Hutton
Bloody Methodists! I married one! The church couldn't cope with a dram drinking Scot and has long since gone, but not the marriage. Her indoors' Sunday School teacher demonstrated the evils of drink by soaking liver in meths!! She has since become a careful consumer of one flute of cider a day. Very worrying for her soul!
Alan Messenger
Don, my wife was educated at Methodist Ladies College in Adelaide and she ended up marrying a NZ West Coaster!
Don Hutton
Did she teach which eating irons were for which course? Us Coasters are so lacking in refined table manners!

Being a heathen Don where was that church
Don Hutton
I don't know, unless it was the original church on the site of the stone church over the railway line from Revvies which has also gone.
