Mike Waghorne I wonder whether there were two entrances to the Tyneside mine. The vertical shaft was clearly just downriver from the bridge. But when we moved to Brunner in 1953 there was still a small Tyneside mine just upriver from the bridge. It had an incline entrance and was worked by a handful of men. As a kid, I was allowed, surely illegally, to go into the mine, even showing some visitors around. But it was so close to the river bank that once you went down ten or twenty metres the whole area was flooded. It was fascinating.

Mary Moffitt It would be a good to have a sketch map showing where the different mines were. I can think of about five in Brunner (settlement area) but don't ask me the names or to pinpoint them. I always get them mixed up. Then there are the others in the Brunner Borough. The larger area had a name Coaldale at one stage.
It was a fascinating place where the men won a lot of control of their world. Like Blackball the Brunner Miners provided all of the social amenities in the young community, including a doctor, but even more so.
I am thinking about the way this particular group of miners in Brunner provided the doctor free to the whole community, non-miners and children included, whereas in Blackball the doctor was paid for by one group of miners and got into trouble for treating members of another mining group. He had to treat those ones out of his own pocket, because he could not charge them or see them die.
I'm glad to have grown up in a community where everyone mattered, whether in the 'in-group' or not.Steph JF
