DescriptionThis map of the Kumara Goldfield shows the complexities of all the Water Races and Sludge Channels on the Field. You can see that Dillmanstown was a series of buildings on each side of the road and Larrikins, which was eventually sluiced out, has only a few buildings left.
The map is dotted with some well known West Coast names on the various claims.
Kumara is laid out in the American way, First Street to Fifth Street, and is not yet connected by road to Dillmanstown. The road to Kumara Beach is shown coming into the North Belt, but today it comes onto Seddon Street and leaves from Seddon Street and connected to the road to Dillmanstown. A school is shown at the East end of Dillmanstown and the existing Kumara School is shown as School Reserve.
Another interesting feature is the position of the road to Greenstone and Mitchells. It is shown as Main Street (now Greenstone Road) and leads to the Taramakau River and a bridge is shown. The road today is opposite fifth Street at the other end of Seddon Street. Don Hutton This is an absolutely brilliant map and commentary Geoffrey. Thank you. I zoomed right in and the resolution is terrific. Some very interesting names there too. I wasn't aware that the L & S were doing photolithography in 1899. Sounds like modern high tech!
