Collapse of line throws engine down bank, Nov 1939.

DescriptionAs a mixed passenger and goods train from Christchurch to Greymouth was nearing Kaimata about 10 miles from Greymouth at 4 o'clock last Thursday morning, the engine was carried from the line by a wash-out and plunged 20 ft down a bank.
The driver Mr SM Horn of Greymouth was killed instantly but the fireman Mr MJ Creighton and the seven passengers in the carriage immediately behind the engine escaped unhurt.

Lower photo: The engine tender wedged between the engine and the first carriage. It thus prevented the carriage from toppling down the bank.
