Larna Pizzato Awww thats nice to know Debbie Crestani :-) She was such a Beautiful soul, everyday I would hear her sing, even from our house!
Larna Pizzato And she always sung in Italian too .... :-)
Lyn Wallace And on Wallace side. Johns GGrandmother Maria Del a Costa had a Hotel at Kumara.
Margaret Moore I came from Runanga and remember them all
Judy Crestani The Crestani's settled in Rapahoe first and then some immigrated to the big city Runanga.
Clare Arnel All the Italians in Runanga were such great people and well loved and respected. All the above names are very familiar to me. Went to school with lots of Italians. I remember Jimmy Stella, who had to do all the shopping as his mother could not speak a word of English.
Helen Brennan The ladies always met that I remember by Rubbos shop and spoke in Italian .brings back memories remember all those families such nice people
Anne McEnaney Larna Pizzato, I well remember your Grandmother MaryAnna. We lived at the bottom end of Duncan Street, she would be walking home past our place, up Walker Street then up the railway cutting home. Her voice was truly magical. She would sing from the Hall Jones Street corner and when she was outside our house, she would stop and sing to my Nana, who would be sitting on the front veranda , Nana was elderly not so well, she just loved to see Maryanna coming. Things like this are not forgotten easily. Yes your grandmother was a wonderful lady.
Roger Howell Would this be the same Soster family that I delivered the Grey Star to in Shakespeare St by Grey High School 1961 to 1964?
Paul Soster yes Roger Howell it certainly would be,no109.
Larna Pizzato Thankyou for that wee story Anne, has made my night. She was truely so loving & beautiful, full of warmth :-)
Pauline Schafer In Brunner by the church we had the Mosiglios, an elderly couple.
Tom Esta Richardson Don't forget the Passwello's,old Mr Passwello used to ride around Runanga on his motorbike singing Italian songs. My Grandad Guiseppe Piasente worked in the mine and was a cobbler, but they were best for the Salami making.
Clare Arnel I remember often taking shoes to be mended by Mr Piasente in Runanga.
Heather Newby Dandos
Heather Newby Negri lived in Blaketown and he ran a ferry service across the Blaketown lagoon to Greymouth. it ran three times a day. At first he charged a flat fare for the housewives who used his service.. a flat fare for the whole day but they took advantage of that and crossed the lagoon and back three times a day, so he charged them for each trip and the women ended up going over to Greymouth once a day. that was about 1909`ish.
Roger Howell I wonder whether the Vieceli family who ran the Norcasa fish and chip shop in Greymouth in the 1960's would be part of this group. Also the Zampese family was well known in Greymouth.
Margaret E Sadler Yes I think the Vieceli Louise & Emily also took over the Gilmour Hotel.
Brenda Brown. And Grogan and Blackmores [Louie Vieceli father] worked for ''K'' Stores early on
Heather Newby Imagine coming to Greymouth in the 40`s and earlier from Italy! I doubt whether they would find any pasta in Greymouth then
Tom Esta Richardson Mum (Esther Piasente at 84 would be one of the oldest still alive. Grandad and Mr Soster would always be dressed in their suit's to go to the Working mens club, always dressed immaculate.
Alan Messenger Ron Negri had the Norcassa Fish and Chip shop. Brian Vieceli I think owned Grogan and Blackmore and later the Gilmer pub. He later moved to Christchurch and had a pub there.
Margaret E Sadler. Brian moved out of the Gilmour Hotel when him and Tom Bird brought Grogans & Blackmores. in November 1964, 50 years ago!!! Took over from the Forrest Bros. Jack. Len and Ray who then took over the Recreation Hotel from Hughie Morgan.
Alan Messenger The Negri family were a part of Blaketown history. tony Junior was manager of Evening Star for many years.
Heather Newby where abouts was the Norcassa fish shop Alan Messenger? I remember the name so well
Alan Messenger Was in Mackay St, just around corner from Star office, pretty much opposite Press office
Alan Sadler The Sosters lived 4 doors down from us on Ranfurly St.
I was very young but I also remember a lovely woman with the surname Dara Gossi?
(I have spelt that phonetically so please excuse if incorrect).
Anne McEnaney I can remember the Daragossi,s (spelling?), I think the girls, name was Reena and the brother was Aldo. They were italian, I seem to recall they went to Wellington. Some of the old Runanga ites, will remember them i'm sure
Margaret E Sadler Yes caught up with Rena in Wellington approx 7 years years ago, group of St Mary's girls x Greymouth got together for dinner along Oriental Parade. Her brother owned lots of property in Newtown area.
Anne McEnaney Thanks Margaret, the old memory still going along ok. Mine I mean !!!
Margaret E Sadler If we all keep our memories going Anne we will prevent Alzheimer's in old age . so they tell me.!!
Steph Rubbo In the late 80's I ended up living in one of Aldo's flats in Mt Vic Wellington. Didn't realise who my landlord was going to be until I moved in, so was surprised to find that he knew Dad from Runanga.
Deborah Shirley My mother (Pauline Cust) told me she remembered neighbors with Salami hanging in their hallways.
