It was 31 years ago that a raging sea, high tide and swollen Grey River combined to send floodwaters surging through the Greymouth town centre in unprecedented levels, wreaking total havoc on businesses houses and the infrastructure.

Anne Bruce I, along with others were resucued from the top of a verandah at Coast Business Machines. Dropped off way up further in the town and walked home. Soaked!

Tony Paul I am on the right hand side. Peter Haddocks boat if I remember correctly. Photo taken from Kings Hotel. We were trying to Get Ian Tennant and his mother out of the jellery shop at the other end of the street. Someone threw an orange at the boat from Kings balcony!!

Bev Huston Never to be forgotten- in September our School Library Service Centre was in Lord Street adjacent to the Tyre Repairers...Looking out at the floodwaters just underneath the eaves of the Greymouth Club building and realising that's where the May floodwaters reached and we had 3 hours to go until high water, I asked John Paul Principal if JP students could come and help us lift the (over 2000 books) stock to higher shelves, which they did very well. Ironically the only book that got damaged was a children's book titled "It'll be alright on the day" ! Later on I was asked by Peter Kerr who had been appointed Flood Recovery Co-ordinator to get help to retrieve historic Harbour Board logs and then later Pioneer Library items; these were all put into black rubbish bags and transported to the Tip Top Icecream factory freezers where they were later taken to the National Library Conservation unit in Wellington.

Philip Sim I see in the West Coasters 1860-2010 The Golden Years book page 214 has a photo of The Union Hotel. This was owned by our ancestor John Shannahan who married Catherine Ryan. Another ancestor Terence Kiely built this Hotel and married their eldest daughter Johanna . John and Catherine lived for a while in former house of chief Werita Tainui.Davida Simpson
