DescriptionRich veins of gold found in a quartz reef near the town led to its name, and also its nickname of "Quartzopolis". Gold was first discovered near the town in 1866, although the major discovery was made in 1870. Soon after, the town briefly boasted a population of several thousand. CommentsIna Lineham Alluvial gold drew miners in a rush to the Inangahua in 1866. The quartz reef was discovered in 1870... the biggest ones from about June onwards. The town seems to have been first named in the newspapers 17th Jan 1871. Before that it was associated with Rosstown. Afterwards various newspapers reported it as!Reeftown. And Reefton was thought of in its hay day the Quartzopolis of New Zealand. Sometimes also referred to as a goldopolis... and a fogopolis. Reefton the City of the Mist.

I wonder if this is one of my gg grandfather's pictures. He was a photographer in Reefton from 1873/4 for quite a few years. Only a few of his pictures remain. William Haydon Lawley Leech.
