In the 50's Tunney and Fred were Strongman miners living in Cobden and Jack Hinton had the Cobden pub.

Lee Williams.."These guys raised an amazing amount of money for the Cobden Rugby Club (11,288 pounds in 5 years)the players went on tours to the North Island. Some of the fundraising involved horse racing and beer, my Dad Tunney (R.L.) Williams's other favourite pursuits."

Peter Robertson Jack Hinton had Kells.My father in law had the Cobden,the Cobden hotel supported the League Club,so I suppose they each supported a different faction.

Old Fred Eggleton, we used to pick him and his dog scamp on Sunday mornings or when ever there was a regatta at lake Brunner , he was the official in the start box , he also had cherub dinghy Outcast was it’s name that a few of us sailed , I have great memories of flying a spinnaker ,skinnyvholmes was skipper I was on the trapeze , f-in fun

Towards the end of his life, Jack Hinton VC was a regular attender at the New Brighton RSA. Had a few conversations with him. He was a lovely guy. When he died, he was buried next to my wonderful friend Syd Creagh, and i think they would have enjoyed each other's company. Rest in peace Jack, and Syd.

David Howe yes I wondered when I saw that if it was Jack Hinton VC. He & Charlie used to visit Burnham camp bars every ANZAC day. I was part of Charlie Upham's funeral guard

How popular was union back then? I know it was the big game in Buller but I’ve always understood league was the big game down on the Coast.

Joe. We had 9 seniorteams in the 60s 2 junior competitions Greymouth and Westland . Rugby was strong.

Jack Hinton was a holder of the Victoria Cross.

Ian Tennent Jack played down his efforts that earned him the VC. When i thanked him for his service, he said he was " Bloody Scared" at the time.
